DDHS – Damerham and District Horticultural Society

The Society's membership is drawn primarily from Damerham, Rockbourne, Whitsbury, Sandleheath and Martin although anyone is welcome.

We have about 200 members, most of whom have a general interest in gardens and gardening; some have wide experience and knowledge of plants and gardening whilst others are beginners looking to learn or simply enjoy the company.

We hold monthly events including talks, practical workshops, shows, visits, a plant sale and a summer party usually held in a member's garden.  These are listed in our membership card with details on our website and in the quarterly newsletter.

Within the society there are some members who are happy to provide individual, informal advice on specific or general gardening topics.

Annual Membership costs £8.00 per person or £12.00 per couple.

Members are entitled to free entry to shows, up to 50% discount off Suttons Seeds, plus free entry to most of the society's events. Admission to talks cost £3.00 per person for non members.

If you are interested in joining please go to their website www.ddhs.co.uk or a membership application form is available from the membership secretary, Carolyn Andrews 01725 518802

Campanology – the Art of Bell Ringing

The Damerham and Martin Bell Ringers ring on Sunday mornings at either Damerham or Martin, starting half and hour before the service begins.  We also ring, if required, for weddings – usually on Saturdays and for other events throughout the year

We practice alternatively at Damerham and Martin from 7.30 to 9.00 on Friday evenings.

Learners and visiting ringers are always welcome.  It takes several weeks to learn to handle a bell and then the learner can begin learning methods – patterns in which the bells change order.  Some methods are centuries old; some modern ones are composed with the help of computers.                 Royal British Legion - Damerham and Western Downland Branch

Chairman: Captain John Kelly OBE

Registered Charity No 219279

Your local RBL branch serves the Western Downland communities of Damerham, Martin, Rockbourne and Whitsbury. The Royal British Legion provides lifelong support for the Armed Forces community, serving men and women, veterans, and their families, and is the national custodian of Remembrance.

Our branch aim is to raise the profile of the RBL in our communities, to raise funds for the RBL’s charities and to remember the service and sacrifice of those of us who have served or are serving in the Armed Forces, in peace and war. We do this by:

  • Raising money through the Poppy Appeal and through local events, such as our annual Coffee Morning in November.
  • Representing the Legion on local remembrance occasions, such as ceremonies held at our War Memorials on Armistice Day on 11th November, and in services at our churches on Remembrance Sunday.
  • Bringing the welfare needs of qualified personnel and their dependants within our local community to the notice of the RBL County Office.
  • Providing ‘Christmas Comforts’ to particularly deserving members of our local community.
  • Holding meetings, including our Annual General Meeting in October.

We welcome new branch members to support this worthwhile charity and you don’t have to have a service background to join us. Just visit the RBL website at: http://www.britishlegion.org.uk/membership/become-a-member/, click ‘Join the Royal British Legion’, follow the instructions and, when prompted to find your branch, click ‘Damerham & Western Downland RBL Branch’. Please let us know if you have joined so we can welcome you.

You can contact our Branch through the Secretary Jime Eames, at Email: jim.eames@btinternet.com
