Damerham Welcome Pack

WW1 - people and memories

Herbert George Ambrose 1872 to 29.11.1914 - born in Damerham
My name is Justine Dalton and I live in Torpoint, Cornwall.
As part of our WW1 commerations, we are having a walk around our village of people who lived in houses in the village who were killed in WW1.
George Herbert Ambrose lived in my current house and was killed in 29th November 1914 in France.

His name is on a memorial in our local church.  He was from Damerham a son of a school teacher, John T Ambrose born 1833 died 1900 and Jane Ambrose born 1835 to 1906.

I have been researching the family and trying to find a descendant.  My question to you is are there any Ambroses still in Damerham?  Herbert was born in 1872 in Damerham, he was a serving soldier (Royal Welsh Fusiliers) before WW1 broke out, he died of his wounds in Wimmereux atthe age of 42, and is buried in the cemetery there.

I would love to find a photo of him.  He was married to Alice a millbrook girl and they had 2daughters by Alice’s 1st marriage, she was widowed before she married Herbert.
I just wondered if anyone who has any information could get in touch witht me.  I can provide more of the family’s details other siblings etc, details.
A remembrance cross will be placed for him in our Garden of Remembrance and his name read out on the 11th November 2018, and I will be displaying a poster in my window.

Please get in touch with the Parish Clerk if you have any information.
