Where did you live before you came to Damerham?
I was born in Enfield, Middlesex, but have moved about a great deal throughout my life. I had lived in a dozen different places before I came to Damerham in September, 2000.
You are retired now, but what was your job in the past?
I started in the Insurance World, then moved to the Insurance side of Ford Motor Company. For the last 26 years of my career, I worked as Personnel Manager and Company Secretary for BMW UK.
What do you do to relax?
I fostered rescue dogs until one of them became a permanent resident – he is called Del, and we are great friends, and spend a lot of time walking together.
I have tried my hand at a lot of things, but the only really lasting hobby has been my fascination with computers. I build them and write programs for them. At the moment, I have 13 computers, although some of them are real old classics, such as the BBC Model B.
I have always had an ambition to play a musical instrument, and have recently started to learn the piano.
As a very new member, how do you see the role of the Parish Council?
I see the Council `s role as one that manages the resources of the Village for the benefit of the people who live here. It collects money from the residents by way of the Precept, and it is the Council`s duty to use this money wisely. This is why I feel that the Parish Plan is so important – it gives us a real map of what people want.
Your views on the Parish Plan?
The level of participation in the Plan by almost everyone in the Village gives us a very solid feel of what the people want in the future. We may not be able to do everything in the Plan, but I feel it is our duty to do as much as we can.
You main concerns for the Village?
Like many people I am concerned about the traffic – its speed, its volume, and the size of the vehicles which come through here. It makes it more difficult and dangerous to walk in the roads, and buildings and verges in the High Street particularly are being damaged.
When I first moved here, I thought that the Village was a pretty, well-tended place, but I think that perhaps we have slipped a bit in this regard. I would like us to address this – to be involved in keeping things clean and tidy, to discourage littering, and to keep the verges in the centre of the Village well mown.
Your dearest wish for the Village?
Like many people I don’t really want it to change. This is a smashing place to live in, and I feel at home here.
